How to Create a Sucessful E-Fed By Thomas Ruble
In order for a person to Create an E-Fed, I should warn you about several KEY factors that you need to run a fed:
1) Dedication – You need to be able to run it through thick and thin
2) Time – You need to have around 1 hour/day to dedicate yourself to running an average fed, more if it is a larger and more popular one
3) Respect/Authority – You need to be able to Respect others, yet demand the same in return for your efforts.
These 3 factors create the basis of which a Owner of an e-fed must have. Without any of these factors, your fed will be doomed like 1/3 of today’s e-feds are. When you start a fed, it is ok to start it on a free server because you don’t want to start off putting all your eggs in one basket, and have it fail. However, once your fed is settle for 5 or 6 months, getting a domain name and a hosting service for $10-20/month or maybe even $50/year or two would be helpful in expanding your fed. (eWmania has FREE hosting even!) Some of the past ‘giants’ of the industry, such as fWo, CWL, IWO, DWF and others held a domain or several domains that redirected to a main hosted domain, and so they got more visitors that way.
The second part is that an owner needs to have a good, TRUSTWORTHY staff. Believe me, in the DWF, for example, some staff member that we trusted apparently had hacked the site from within, so it was an ‘inside job’. A suggestion is to put up ‘File Manager’ scripts in the directories, and give certain individuals access to certain directories so not all Directories will be deleted. In addition, a good staff is the backbone of a goof fed. I myself spent 3-4 hours a day at least working on updating the DWW/DWF sites and though it was exhausting, I think it wasworth it.
Then, there is the Wrestlers themselves. Many new feds think that they can be picky about who they choose to be on the roster, and sometimes it works, but other times it does not. Many e-feds fail because they think they are the greatest and can pick who gets in or not. My first fed accepted all, and after time, many people came to it, and applied, so I became semi-selective. That is how I feel many e-fed owners today should act when confronted with an Application. A fed like IWO, fWo, DWF, etc. could reject apps they didn’t like because they had the historical basis and the basic roster already to be able to be selective.
Finally, we come to the frills. Things like Videos and Poser are always good. But it takes TIME to master such things and to produce great works. So when you consider this, then consider the factor of TIME.
In effect, these 4 factors create an e-fed in the most basic terms. Sure, you won’t get lots of hits at first (unless you’re a hyped up fed like CWL was) but it will come with patience and time. Until next time….
