WHAT IS E-WRESTLING? ( A QUICK HISTORY)

Posted by eWm

What is E-Wrestling? This is a question that is commonly heard by ‘newbies’ in the e-wrestling Genre. E-Wrestling is short for Electronic Wrestling, which is a Wrestling game played over the internet. Fantasy Wrestling has been around for ages, maybe since the first pro wrestling federation which started around 1905. Ewrestling could very well have started when email was created back in 69′, although it first started to get its large fan base around 1993 when the internet began to flourish, mostly as e-mail e-feds or bbs efeds, where you would e-mail everyone on a list your ‘promo’ or ‘role-play’ or whatever you want to call it. A roleplay is an in character interview with your wrestler talking about his match or whatever you choose him to do. This is also known as flashing, cutting a promo, an interview and various other terms. For more information on roleplaying check out Garret’s roleplay guide here.

In 1997 and 1998, a new type of e-fed became to flourish: Role-playing Board feds. Although these type of feds were popular starting in 1993 when they were known as BBS Feds, they really started to take over the email fed popularity in 1998 and 99. With the opening of many free Board services, many feds thought it was easier to Role-play on boards than waiting on mailing lists. Nowadays, large portions of the thousands of e-feds on the net are Role-play board based. In early 1998, several ‘revolutionary’ feds entered the realm of e-wrestling.    First, there was the IWO (Internet Wrestling Organization)(www.iwo-online.com). Opening in early to mid 1998, it was outgrowth of the now defunct FWL. Jamie Kosoy, who disagreed with the FWL owner, formed it, and have a collection of some of the best Rpers on the net in it in a matter of weeks to a few months, from Zombie and Phelen Kell to Rob Kestler, Psycho Jay and Syphon Fission. This is perhaps the greatest e-mail fed on the internet today, and it has gained much respect, as well as some discredit to some problems they’ve have over time. And even though the cards haven’t always been on time (1-2 days late) they are always fun to read!

Then there was fWo (Fans Wrestling Organization)(www.fwowrestling.com). Travis Beaven truly revolutionized the e-wrestling field when he was the first person to introduce Metacreations’ Poser to the world of E-feds. Many claim that the power structure of the fWo is merely based on the Posers. However, I once felt this was true, but not anymore. Now, I can see former legends like The Flying Frenchie, Scott Slugger, Zero and countless others (most of whom who are in CWL), had stepped in fWo and made it what it is today.

Then, in early 1999 (January 26), The Dream Wrestling Federation opened on a sub-par site on Geocities. The Owner, Darren Crouse, who has grown in fame recently for his collection of controversial Fav. Messages started the fed as a fed for Real and Original wrestlers. He had at one point 120 wrestlers in DWF! Then, a year later, when SSS won the Dream Title and became a Hall of Famer, Darren moved the site to www.ddwww.com, where it is today. Over the last 3 years, it has matched itself up in most areas to the other ‘giants’ of the field, fWo, IWO and many others.

In the end, these 3 feds are merely examples of how dedication can bring a small fed to the big time, and how large an impact each of them have had. Therefore, e-wrestling was and in my opinion, will always be great!
